My day of Falconry!

For my birthday I received the most amazing gift - a falconry workshop!  I had seen Nikky Youngblut from Ladyhawk falconry (her website is a work in progress, but you can get the general info there) do a demonstration for nature London and was totally enthralled.

So,  I got a workshop with her and her incredible birds and these are some of the pictures from my day.

She has two Harris hawks, Odin and Echo and a red-tail, Grimm

This picture is actually from the end of the day when she let me give them a bath after our HOT day in the sun...

Here is Grimm in a tree - yeah, it was hot!

Odin decided to have a teenage moment or two, so his flight time was cut short!  Here he is checking out the view...

Odin is a Harris Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus)  These hawks are a medium - large raptor that breeds from the southwestern United States south to Chile and central Argentina. The Harris hawks are unique as they live in social groups and hunt cooperatively.  They are very commonly used in falconry because of this.

Look like they trust each other!

I was so nervous taking the birds out of the van and bringing them back to their perches.  There are so many things to remember.  Uppermost for everyone of course being the well being of these magnificent creatures.  Nikki was such an amazing teacher and I knew that she knew I could do it or she wouldn't have let me!  She was right there the whole time so I knew that she'd let me know if I was about to do anything incorrectly!

The crazy thing at first was that - I know the birds trust Nikki- she feeds them and cares for them (and cares for them like I hope you would think she does!)  I could hardly believe how trusting they were with me.  I could tell they were a little wary when I was walking around with them, but I'd trust them more than a strange parrot!

What an incredible day.  You just know this has got me thinking.
